COVID Also Sucks

My family made it nearly 3.5 years dodging COVID, but alas.

A family “friend” decided her “sniffles” didn’t warrant a warning, and ended up getting my wife infected. Which then spread to the rest of us. Five solid days of continuous fevers and muscle pain thus far, let’s see how much longer it can go! Plus, the bonus roll on long COVID.

I’m not going to write more on this subject though, because it makes me (ir)rationally angry. Well, other than to say this: if you know you’re sick and possibly contagious, fucking say something.

  1. Do your own research, Covid isn’t real!

  2. Visit an equine parasitologist this instant!

Seriously, this does suck. Hope you all feel better soon without any lingering nonsense.

    • My fever broke this morning, but the kiddo’s is still going on. Really rethinking our commitment to being responsible parents vis-a-vis TV time. How old was I when I got my first NES again? And before that it was basically unlimited soap operas with the elderly babysitter, and I turned out (mostly) OK.

  3. Not regarding this specific case, but in general, you seem to feel everything has to be communicated to avoid possibility of infection. In principle I agree with that, but I wonder where you draw the line? With vaccinations lowering the severity of the symptoms a mild headache can be an indicator of covid. Throat ache can be. Same for a runny nose. And so many random things people have. (my girlfriend lucked out when she had it with only a headache. I was less lucky)

If I sleep badly I wake up with a sore throat, does that warrant skipping the visit, cause you can never be sure? Where I live (Belgium) we basically don’t bother with it anymore. Everyone I come in contact with is vaccinated. Self testing is not conclusive and with symptoms seemingly covering all aspects of ‘being alive’ we have given up.

    • Here’s the thing: if my kiddo gets a fever, he can’t go to daycare until 24 hours after it subsides. So unless you’re going to take off work to babysit him, no, keep your cough, sore throat, and/or runny nose to your damn self. This COVID episode has quite literally stolen over $2000 out of my family’s pocket between daycare costs (which we pay regardless of whether he’s out sick), sick days taken, and lost productivity in pretending we can work from home with a 4-year old velcro kid. All so they could carpool to Costco for a few hours.

Now, obviously, I don’t sleep with a N95 on. I haven’t masked in grocery stores for months. After all, I have a kid in daycare – there’s a given amount of disease that’s just unavoidable. But I don’t feel like it’s unreasonable to think twice about sharing the same 5 cubic meters of air for hours with someone actively leaking bodily fluids.
